For me the most important lesson that history teach us is NOT TO DO THE SAME MISTAKES!! If we learn from the mistakes of the past generations we will some day manage not to repeat (as we have done so far) the catastrophes of the past!
Of course it is my personal opinion!

The thing that fascinates me most about my study of History is how when you begin to study the subject it's as if you have a jigsaw that you've just started. You can see some of the picture but it doesn't make sense to you yet. After lots more study you are able to complete the jigsaw and at last get a clearer version of the picture. This is simply an analogy and historical jigsaws would inevitably have many pieces which were lost for ever, nevertheless, our aim is always toward clarification and balance.

I have learned from history that many people refuse to believe the facts but are more prone to believe in the stories that have no proof historically. I have learned not to repeat the mistakes of my fathers, but have found that most are repeating the same mistakes through generations. I have learned that cultural wars have existed for hundreds and hundreds of years and I don't see them stopping in my life time. I have learned that many have tried to erase the history of those before in order to create the belief that their dynasty or beliefs were greater. I have learned that most of what was thought has been proven through carbon dating and current findings to be much different than what the world thought was historical truth and we are uncovering and learning more and more as we move forward in the future. History says that the Pilgrims were the first to land in North America now we have found and discovered that the Vikings and even the Chinese were here way before. So I have learned that we are still uncovering and learning more and more about our historical past. I have learned that yesterday is history and we can make history today. I feel opposite of what you have quoted as of what you have learned. I think it is harder for man today. Historically the world was yours to conquer, there was the vast unknown and with strength and determination you could build a life, lay claim to an area of land to build upon. But there are few places that exist that one can go and lay claim too and create a world onto your own. I feel it is harder for a young man today than it was in my fathers day and age. One thing I have learned that I feel is the most important in life, is that throughout history it has taken two sometimes three generation to overcome the travesties of war, and our son and daughters have paid a price for the emotional scars of our fathers who gave of themselves and have lived to tell of the horror through these wars.
