I was a HUGE fan of Warren Moon, but seeing as how I'm from Houston, black, and once a QB it would make since wouldn't it.
Wasn't a huge Elway or Aikman fan. Marino was the nastiest of them all, just never had enough of a team around him. Montana was just a winner plain and simple. Moon had just as much talent as any of them and he proved it, that's why he's getting deservedly elected into the Hall this year. Cunningham was good but I can understand if people don't put him with the others. Doug Williams made a hell of a breakthrough in the biggest stage possible. His career didn't mount to much but his feat should always be remembered.

Many good points have been made. These are mine.
1) Elway in the 70's??? crazy
2) Moon was great, maybe even top 5 but since he didn't do it in the NFL ( I mean com'on CFL is a joke 20k+ yards is more like 10k in the NFL) I wouldn't put him in the top 5.
3) Championships as a criteria is a cruel criteria as well as a bogus one. Winning a superbowl is in fact having favorable timing and a good balanced team around you. Look at T.Brady, and T.Dilfer the numbers aren't great but they have the same or more superbowl rings than Elways & Marino. Even more crueler if you bring it up to Jim Kelly! Marino would have won if he had a running game anytime in his career, and Kelly would have won if his running game didn't choke in the superbowls he went to!
4) I am a Dolphin fan and naturally I would say Marino is the best but I don't. You have to give credit due where credit is due. Unitas, Starr, and Griese were mentioned and they were mentioned with good reason. They put up great numbers during an era of the NFL where passing was not a common ground. Then running game was. They did great with less opportunity to do it in. Marino benefited from some Referee and rules reforms of the 80's to make the game more exciting (the airing it out period).
So it's really impossible to compare QB's alltime when the game has changed so much in the lifetime of the NFL.
No particular order: Elway, Marino, Montana, Bradshaw, Unitas, Starr, Staubach, Favre, Kelly, Moon, Aikman, Graham, Young, and Tarkenton.
And plese no more talk about P.Manning and Cunningham. They're not in the same category as these guys, they're not.

Boy O Boy, do I remember how great John Elway was in the 70's in the NFL, especially after being drafted out of Stanford U in 1983. Do some research before blatantly talking about how great Elway was in the 70's and 80's. He won his two championships in 97-98 and 98-99 seasons.
As for the question on Cunningham and Moon, RC (and Steve Young) made it valuable to teams to have a QB that could throw and run. Especially being an Afro-American QB, Cunningham (and Doug Williams), made it popular and acceptable for non-white, scrambling QB's in the NFL.
As for Warren Moon, his career was hurt because many NFL teams didn't want him at QB. They assumed that because he is black, that he would be better suited at a different skill position. Just like when he was looking for a college, he told the NFL that he would not switch positions and somehow he went undrafted.
Moon is still one of the most underrated QB's in NFL history. He has 49,325 yards passing in the NFL. Unfortunately, because he went undrafted, he spent the first 6 years of his professional career in the CFL where he amassed 21,288 yds passing. Even if you take off 4200 yards from his CFL career (800 yds/season), he would still have about 66,400 yards, which would put him 5000 yds ahead of Marino as the most prolific passer in NFL history.
Since Moon never really came close to leading his NFL teams to the Super Bowl, he never earned the national respect that he deserves. That being said, I would still find it hard to put him in my top 5 QB legend status. Moon's numbers (both CFL and NFL) would dwarf Montana's, but Montana has 4 SB victories. Who knows how many Moon would have had, had be been with the 49ers in the 80's or Cowboys or Packers in the 90's.

I a huge Randell Cunningham fan, I saw him punt the ball 90+ yard in a game once and he did magic with his feet and arm that Vick couldn’t do on Playstation. However, the best Quarterback was and always will be Johnny U. The man played in an era where you could hold the receiver, there was no in the grasp, no roughing the passer, he made football football, he could throw the touch pass better then Montana and the long ball to equal Elway. He was on 4 championship teams that equal Montana, Bradshaw, and others.

Warren Moon and Randal had great careers, but not all time greats. Moon got the hall of fame, but half of his career was in Canada. Don't get me wrong I rooted for him with the Oilers, and he can throw any pass out there, but he was on the team the lost in the biggest come back in playoff history. As for Randal, he made his Eagle teams mediocre at best. He was a threat, no doubt, but he couldn't make all the throws that would help move the chains. He broke down, too, after some tough years in Minnesota. Here's the list, as of now
1. Montana
2. John Elway
3. Dan Marino
4. Jonny U.
5. Peyton Manning *still needs a Super Bowl and he could be the 1st or 2nd
By the way the guy who said Elway played in the 70's is and idiot. He came into the league the same year Marino did, dummy, 1983. You can't count his college year in 1979, or his high school years.

Randell Cunningham was a good QB as far as talent. Not having anyone, come on if I'm not mis taken he had talented RBs when he started as well as being one of the best scrambling QBs. When you go by the passer, if they can run when they need to it adds something. It means they have to be that much better as a passer. His arm didn't really develop until later in his carrer when his legs broke down. I give him credit that he was able to do that but it doesn't really make him great, it means he can adapt.
Moon was great, I won't deny that. Here is the problem though, you asked for the BEST. That means only one when I have answered most of them. Don't know about yours specifically but going by most of the ones I have seen. Well sorry but I thought Marino was better.
To those saying Peyton Manning all I can say is HOW CAN YOU SAY HE IS THE BEST??? He is the best choker maybe. Best QB? Not even in the league at the moment. He has all that talent he better be good. Then he gets to the playoffs and can't do anything. To put Peyton Manning up there all I can say is were you calling Kurt Warner the best when he was winning the Superbowl. He was putting the points up there to make up for no defense. Well that's about where Manning is in my opinion. He has all that talent, so don't argue about defense. They spend the money for the offense, it has to make up for the defense.

1. Montana
2. Marino
3. Elway
4. Unitis
5. Manning, Peyton of course
.
Manning could jump up to the top if he ever stops choking in the playoffs. Moon was amazing, but too much of his career took place north of the border. I'm a Philadelphian....I've seen Randall self destruct on and off the field too many times. He belongs no where near this discussion.
Aikman was a product of a great O-line, plus I just hate Dallas.
I'm not quite sure where to put Brady or Jim Kelly. They gotta be close to the top with a combined 7 SB appearances.

John Elway was the top QB that was in the NFL in the 70's and 80's. This is only my opinion, though there were some others that had comparable talents.
