Why do men wear a necktie when wearing a suit?

Of course I understand that wearing a necktie is more official/fashionable/impressive and all that. But where does this social norm come from historically? What was the original function of the necktie? And why do only men wear neckties?

The tie is a smaller version of the crevat that was popular in the early 19th century. It's original uses were to hide the studs that held your shirt together and to stop rain going down your neck. It developed into something purely decorative.

Sometimes I wear a tie and sometimes I don't. It's amazing how people treat you differently when you're wearing a tie. It seems to represent authority.

Neckties originated in Croatia & showed membership in a band or group.
Sometimes you see schoolgirls wearing neckties as part of theit school uniform in Commonwealth countries.
I think in Engish speaking countries it became a class distinction
badge...the old school tie, the old regiment tie etc

I don't know why women do not wear ties (but some do), but according to what I've heard this was used as a hankee to wipe the mouth while or after dining. Later it became a part of the dress and creative ideas made it as a decorative part of the dress.

Why do only women wear skirts?
Personally, I wouldn't want to be in a skirt!
Women have a huge range of formal fashion (from skirts to trousers). But us poor men only have suits and trousers for our formal fashion, and the only true colours could come from our neckties!

FYI: Girls also wear neckties! To look more formal, Or if you want, You can also wear a bowtie. :)
