I wear an army hat when taking my dogs out. Sides can be clipped to the side or kept hanging down. I wear it because it is really light, and also rain proof! It protects me from the rain (Live in ireland where it does rain quite often) Also when one of the dogs gets into thick woodland (They love the forest) it protects my face from low branches etc.
I got the side of my face grazed twice and it was pretty uncomforatble (Never mind a big red mark) so partner got me the hat and after that ... I discovered army trousers as well as jacket! Same purpose! Comfortable to wear and protect me from grazes and rain! And no i'm not an army freak either! Simply loves to enjoy long walks feeling comfortable and protected!
O and i don't bother with hats any other times either! It's just my dog outing wear!

Country fun (outdoor cooking, horseshoe pitching, stuff like that): cowboy hat (Stetson);
Playing baseball, maintenance on my car: baseball cap (lighter and more comfortable);
Motor sports: helmet (!!!);
most other occasions: no head gear ...
Apart from that: whatever you may like as long as you feel good!

head gear is a trouble to the head Don`t use when do not want for any special ocction Such as safety helmet
