Like many other mammals (including herbivores) monkeys and apes generally eat the placenta and cord. In the wild this is generally considered to be a necessary survival technique, since not only would the afterbirth be attractive to a predator but it is also very protein rich and possibly contains hormones from the infant which may do something to stimulate motherhood or help 'bind' the mother to the child.
I can find very little information on this on the internet but one reference is below.

Yes very good question! Women today, (esp' Western women) make for too much of a simple function like giving birth!
It is after all just like having a good cr**!
I dont understand why all the fuss, the women in the paddy fields give birth and pick up the kid and carry on working (as they should)!
Hope this helps??

I assume monkeys give birth the same way all mammals do, Monkeys are social animals so i would imagine the females in the group help out.

humans are animals who have become so inter-dependant, that we have lost the ability to do things for ourselves in the 'civilised' world! There are pleanty of people out there who have no-one to 'help' them give birth - and even when we see a birth as part of a film - they always show the woman in a ridiculously unnatural position, on her back with legs in stirrups and an anaesthetic in her spine! Animals give birth naturally - all of them - except humans! They are a lot more capable than us!!!!!

Hi there,
Well I'm not a expert on monkeys, thankfully(lol), but I guess the vet would do all that, just as the midwife does in human birth.
Have a great day

a better question might be: why do humans pay doctors thousands of dollars to be present for a fundamental biological function which would occur just as certainly without them? people were obviously propigating the species long before doctors arrived on the scene and started sending bills around.
will we someday be so foolish and helpless as to require the presence of physicians at bowel movements....?

I think the mother chews through the cord, like cats do.
