It depends what you are creating. I'm a writer and when working I can't listen to lyrical music as the words 'get in the way' so I listen to baroque classical; violin, piano, horn concertos even some symphonies but I assume if you're a painter or sculpture then that wouldn't be an issue. I also know my musician mates obviously don't listen to anything whilst working.

Well, you can't beat classic orchestral symphonies to move you, but I wouldn't forget all the beautiful operas and all the many other forms of classical music.
There are many musics to invoke the muses. It all comes down to what your muse likes. Could be a Celtic ballad, or some Joni Mitchell. Music that stirs your spirit, that's what it's all about. Sometimes I like angry rock to fan my fire, when my mind is racing and my pen is burning up the paper.
I'm trying to break out of a long block and begin writing again myself. Too many dusty drafts cluttering up my mind. Time to either clean house or get back to it.

I like either Classical or Ambient Music as background. Also I downloaded a really cool Music Generator called OM.1 for my apple computer, give it a lash and you will love it.

I love Mazzy Star. It's very introspective music to hear in the background while painting, especially the album "Among My Swan."
I generally prefer something mellow, reflective, and even a little somber.

Instrumental with instrumental with soft piano and cello. This always brings out any spark of creativity in me.
But it really depends what I'm trying to create.

For me, it's what I see.
When I see the movie, "TO MEET JOE BLACK"
I want to paint abstract. The paintings in that
movie are beautiful.
