If you go to the NEW YORK TIMES web site and click on archival area it will start you on the right track. You need to put in the event that happened or the date (year or day or month) along with the area; city or country of the world where it took place. You will get an answer most of the time. You have to register to use this feature.

college libraries have internet access to huge databases of many years of back issues of many, many magazines and newspapers from all around the world.

Investigate that route.

You may have to pretend to be a student, if you are not one already.
If that ploy doesn't work, you can sign up for a class to get a student ID, then drop the class and get all but maybe $15 bucks of your money back.
