Well, Alice in Chains was relentlessly dark, despairing and hopelessly beautiful, with strange vocal harmonies that were simultaneously gorgeous and disturbing, and brilliant lyrics which focused mainly on the horrors of drug abuse.
Godsmack is a sickeningly generic Alice in Chains copycat band, whose songs and melodies are unoriginal, and whose lyrics are just idiotic.

Alice in Chains definitely...all of Godsmack's songs are the exact same!

I like both bands, but AIC has to take top honors. They're THE band I grew up with and there will only ever be one Layne Staley and one Jerry Cantrell... I will say that Godsmack can hold their own, though. I've seen them live and they do rock hard, and while Godsmack's sound has been similar through their history, I was mighty impressed with Sully Erna's solo album. You never would have known he was the lead singer of a hard rock band after listening to that album...
