From your description, it sounds like a Japanese fly. Japanese flies are not from Japan, they originate somewhere in the Amazon Rain Forest. If you have seen one, you probably live in southern California, they have had problems with them coming in on crates that are being shipped there. Don't let it land on you, because they carry a dangerous disease that lies dormant within your body for about a year, and then will kill you. If you have it, there is no treatment.

if it is larger than an ordiary house fly then it is probally a horse fly. dont let it land on u. they bite hard.

is it round fly shaped or long fly shaped...could be a mayfly, they only live for 1 day.
