Make sure that the head gaskets are not leaking, usually found on older Outbacks with the Dual Over Head Cam. Wasn't a problem until about 70,000mi to 120,000mi on the car. Also, if the car is close to or over 105,000mi make sure that the timing belt was changed. It is required maintenance at 105,000mi at it costs a lot to do.

Otherwise the Subaru Outback is a great car. They're awesome in the snow, good handling, one of the safest on the road, and last a long time.

P.S. Be aware of sticker shock, these things hold their value!

The Outbacks with the 2.5L motor have had problems with the headgaskets going bad prematurely. This is a very expensive thing to replace and cant' be ignored. If ignored, it will do serious engine damage and the car will not be driveable. Also a problem on these is the clutch for the manual transmission. When shopping for a used Outback, these are 2 areas to pay close attention to. Good luck!
