These critters have been the bane of my existance. Hubby traps gophers and moles but we don't seem to stay ahead of their repoduction rate. This spring gophers have started coming above ground to trim off the branches of mums and salvia to drag down their holes (this is a new form of warfare for them). We live in rural location on a couple of acres. We recently found a lot of gopher and mole holes under the house.
We have stuck the hoses down the holes to flood them out, but that made the ground too wet.We tried moth balls without much success. People have recommended pouring motor oil down the holes, but I don't want to polute the water table.Poison is not an option due to pets.
Has anyone had any success in this area? Is there a systemic or topical treatment that is safe and effective?

If you live in a rural area, you are living in the rabbits/gophers/moles home area. It may be difficult to get rid of all of them.

Moles are usually looking for grubs in the soil. Get rid of the grubs & you will (eventually) get ride of the moles.

Rabbits can be discouraged in a small area by using a spray that combines garlic & dried red pepper. Of course you will have to reapply often. Some people use predator (fox/coyote) urine - available at some garden supply/ feed stores.

Gopers are tough. Some (rich) people dealing with small areas actually bury fencing to line their protected area. Don't think you want to dig up your whole property to a depth of several feet, lay thick guage wire on the bottom & up the sides then return the soil... a lot of work. You might check here:

If you had predators present, you would have a controlled, balanced population.

Pest control services will be able to provide poisons but that will be expensive & potentially dangerous for pets & children.

Good luck!

This kills gophers it's called "Underground Exterminator" I bought it at DeNaults hardware for $15.99. You connect this thing a rubber coupler to your exhaust pipe of your car on the other end you connect a garden hose to it. Open the hole to the burrow /mound and put the hose in, start the car, let it run about 15 minutes. pressurized carbon monxide fills the rodent burrows. Painless death. You need to read the instructions for more details but I gave you the short version. It is made by a company called Manning Products, Inc. In Duluth, Georgia

Now this is like one of those "Old Wise Tales"......but you get ya some "Mothballs" put them in some thing to enable you to get them inside the Gopher-Hole the deeper the better. They can't stand the smell..........and leave! If ya need it done quicker than that, get a long-grape vine or any vine strong and flexible enough to get down the hole with a Lg. shark hook and pull em' out.(careful of Rattlers, you might also get one of those). Also, heard you can take a garden hose and pour gas into the hose and they will come out.(better catchem' when it clears out he/she will return. LOL that's all folks! Hope we are talkin about the same kinda Gophers(tortoise?)

Get one or more of the "Windmill Mole Chasers", item # 47987-2CFH at $7.99 each from www.harborfreight.com that "create an underground ruckus" and prevent them from getting any sleep at night (otherwise quiet for humans). These small rotors are popular here. The rabbits are nicer and friendlier. We once had lots of them until an unusually cold and snowy winter (St. Paul, Minnesota) seemed to end their presence forever with all attempts at restoring them failing.

i heard spraying castor oil on your lawn will get rid of moles and gophers, never tried it though. i have been told that spraying the lawn with a chemical that kills grubs will make moles leave the area because its their food source. i havent tried this either but im going too.as far as rabbits in a garden, plant marigolds around the edges. this works, we do it every year.

Stop feeding your cats... they will start hunting the little varmints.

If you don't like cats get yourself a rat terrier, they are little rodent killing machines.

Hire an exterminator. That is your only option. Only they would know.
