My family is from Mich and NY and when we go visit the first thing i hear after "are you visiting"? (obviously) is "where are you from"? then then next most common thing is "your children are so polite". I know when I first moved to TX from Mich I was amazed at the manners of the children (and I was only 22 - LOL). Is it so uncommon these days in the north for youngsters to hold the door and respect their elders? I know my boys would run in fear if their momma found out they didn't hold a door for a lady (no matter what age), carry groceries for a neighbor or ma'am and sir anyone older than 30! I have noticed that respect and manners are falling by the way-side even in TX (God forbid) but the north to me was even worse! I thought a really "telling" sign of how bad it is was that ppl commented on good behavior not bad....

I am from Alabama and I now live in NW Indiana. Manners or lack there of is one of the first things I noticed when I came up north. My children have always been taught that they should always respect their elders and always be helpful and kind. I know kids are not always kind but, my children know if I find out that they were rude to another childs parents or someone older, there will be some kind of punishment. My children were always taught to Sir and Mam'am anyone older than say 20. And let's not forget the schools. If a child in the south said "huh" to their teachers they would be sent out of the room or to the office. Respect is earned but also should be given if you dont know someone or their age until proven otherwise. That's the way most children in the south are taught.

Im a native texan and have lived most of my life in the south. I have also lived in the north (upstate Ny) and i agree that southrn children are(overall) more polite. I think it has to do with tradition and the fact that southern people are more sociable with thepeople around them, so children are introduced to people as miss this person or mister that person and thats what sticks with them throught their life. My oldest child calls all my friends miss harmony or mister david.
