Measure from the top of the landing to the ground. You say it is 8 feet. Be exact. The right rise for steps is 7 1/2 inches. The right depth for treads is 11 inches. If your height is 8 feet you take 8 feet (96 inches) and divide by 7 1/2 inches which is proper rise. You get 12.8. You cant have .8 of a step so you then divide 96 by 13. That will give you a rise of 7.38", That works out to about 7 3/8" rise. Lay out your stringers for 13 steps of 7 3/8" rise and 11" depth. To do this you will need a carpenters square ($8.00) and I really suggest some locking nuts (about $4.00.) You can get them at any good hardware or lumber store. You will need 2 or better yet 3 - 2x12x16' boards for stringers. You can make your treads out of 2 - 2x6x36" boards. Hope this helps. Email with any further questions.
