I heard that you should only jump your horse once a week? Is this true? Wouldn't you be able to jump a fitter horse more often, etc.

you can jump your horse as much as their fitness allows. Once a week is not usually a good amt(too little) unless the horse is out of shape. Don't push your horse beyond their abilities and do lot's of ground work. If you jump too much, they may become bored or start avoiding it

First off, a horse only has so many jumps "in" him. So you don't want to overdo it.

A horse who is fit, average aged (6-9), and in good health should be able to jump several times a week. Now, this is where common sense comes in. Jumping several times a week does NOT mean jumping a 3'6" course several times a day, for 4 days a week. You'll ruin his legs and/or back that way.

I'd work on height only once a week, at most. And, only If you need the practice of riding larger fences. If not, stay low, and add height only when closer to competition, to tune-up.

Most of the time, riders need to work on distances and turns. And that can be done over low fences-- even ground poles. Or, try a low gymnastic combination like bounce--bounce--in&out, then to a choice of 2-3 stride left or right turn angled fences.

Or, work on a low "skinny" fence, or rollbacks. Most riders also need to work on single fences-- they get hung up on distances.

Working on issues such as turns, distances, and striding will improve ANY horse and rider moreso than jumping courses everyday.

If you have an aged horse, or one with joint issues, you'll not want to jump the legs off him, so take it easy! Once a week should be OK, with a good liniment wrap or rub down after work.

Stay safe, and ride smart!!

Well you have to consider what type of ground you are jumping on and consider if you jump too much the horse could go lame. Once a week, I think, is enough. You could cause injury to the horse through sprain if jumped too much.

Well, my gangsta homies always say that if you're smart, you only get jumped once in your life... but if you're stupid, you get jumped a second time at the very end of your life. Then they throw a bunch of "E" symbols with their hands, and tell you to be true to the gang.

I've never seen anyone jump a horse into the gang though.

When mine is working a full schedule we jump 2-3 times per week and alternate that with other work on the other days.
He gets worked about 5-6 days per week a couple oft hose are light works. We jump only smaller stuff and not as many as you would in a round of jumps when we are training.
We also trail ride and stuff like that so I can vary his routine and he does not get bored.

depending on the breed its self, i would say once or twice. it also depeneds on how many jumps. but in the end i would never jump a horse anyways. but as a trainer and a trimmer i would say twice is more then enough. you dont want to destroy the knees. so please mind the horse before you mind your fun.
