An important part is knowing how to listen to a kind of music. It's almost like learning a language. At first it sounds muddled, maybe you like it but it doesn't mean much. Then you start to be able to pick out bits and that increases until you're finally fluent. Whenever I've approached a new kind of music, there's always some point at which it clicks and I'm able to understand the nuances and what makes it special.
But often people think that they don't like a music, when they just haven't learned the language yet.
Music also resonates in the body in different ways. Think of the deep bass in soul and where you feel that. Other music may 'get into your head.' Think about rhythm, pitch and undertones -- how the instruments interact with each other -- and how you feel with different types of music (calm, agitated, excited, etc.). If you really want to explore this, try headphones and live shows too. And check out whatever seems interesting from the library's music collection.
Music has physiological effects on body and brain -- since our bodies are all in different states (nutrition, genetics, lifestyle), it makes sense that we prefer different types of music.
Your question is really interesting, worthy of a doctoral dissertation. In the meantime, there's a lot you can learn just from listening closely and paying attention to how it makes you feel.

As someone who listens to many different genre's of music, my preference being hip hop and rap, I think for you to like music, you have to feel it. The music speaks to you in some way. For instance, when I listen to Goa Trance, I picture fight scenes in my head, the heart starts pumpin, and I get riled up. When I listen to rap, I listen to the poetry of the words, and I analyze what they mean to me, comin up in the streets.

No one knows what causes them to like what they like. For instance, I really don't like country music, but there are some artists that sing country that I like. It must be pre-programmed before we are born...

It depends on what kind of a person you are. You listen to a particular genre and then if you like it you'll start listening to that particular genre.
