As I get older, I find that I only have had one "true" friend through it all, even my family has disowned me at one point or another. And only one friend has stuck by my side. I meet people everyday, and I see them as a "convienance" My question lies...how many "true" friends do YOU have? .......

I've found the same thing as I've gotton older. After some thought, I decided that friendships are composed of fuctionality and reciprocity. People are drawn to you, and you to them, because you each have something to lend to the other...a fuction. Whether it's a good sense of humor, positive attitude, open mind, similar likes/dislikes, outgoing nature, etc. As people accumulate more and more friends, they tend to find similar functions in more than one friend, and have the tendency to be closer to the friend in the closest proximity. If they feel that they are getting as much from the friendship as they are giving, then the friendship has a reciprocal quality, and will last as long as the balance remains. I would say that a "true" friend is someone who chooses to wait through the occasional unbalancing of the friendship with the same determination, admiration, and resolve until the balance is once again achieved. I have 3 "true" friends... The rest are basically reflections of former friends I had long ago.

Depression is all about friends and family because it is our expectations that can go wrong and do go wrong We are left wondering what did we do. The truth is friendship is an ongoing and evolving thing. Just to be an inside-player in a group and hear praise and love doesn't mean all is well. Some of the most desperate of people are in the center of their group. What once was a convenience is now a need. Tempers and testosterone run high .

Honestly i can say i have 2...one is my friend Dan, who is like a father to me, he will tell me like it is whether the truth hurts or not, has stuck by me through thick and thin, and the other one would be my man, we were friends for a long time, and he is the only other person i can count on other than my sister.

Only one...but I really shouldn't say only...He is the only one who has endured all this time, and put up with all my odd mannerisms. I find sometimes I think I have found another friend like this...but then it ends...and I'm back to one again...

Now that I think about it, I don't have any true friends. I have several acquaintances, a few co-workers, an ex-wife, and a lazy good-for-nothing dog. But friends, I have none.

I have only 2. One in the flesh, and one in the cyber world. Yes my cyber friend is a true friend, and worth her weight in gold.
