2000-3500 is a good start, but it very much depends on the boat. Wakeboard boats are bigger (usually v-drive) and can add a lot more than 500lbs in balast to sink down the back for increased wake. Some people add actual weights to limit the amount of water they have to pump on & off, but I don't like that. Go check out some of the manufacturer sights. (mastercraft, malibu, tige, etc)

Some wake boats have a water bag or tank that might add 500 pounds or more for a larger wake.
