There are important issues in life like Health, Money, Happiness, Work, Children etc etc.
There are also less important issues. Football is the most important of those less important issues.

As someone once said, football is not a matter of life or death.........ITS MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN THAT!!
The World Cup is a fantastic event where thousands of people all over the world can show their pride in their country and wave flags and sing songs without a single person getting killed.
If we had a world cup every year there would never be another war.

Of course, it all depends. Compared to what? Compared to the fact that a million people have died from malaria in Africa, 95% of them under 5 years of age, or the millions who have died from AIDS, well, no the World Cup is insignificant. Compared to the fact that 40 million people in the USA have no health insurance, no the World Cup isn't important. The list is endless. But life is about balance and humans have constructed diversions, entertainments, activities that are pleasurable that really are avenues for humans to exhibit some of our most valuable and inspiring characteristics. Characteristics that are also applied as we search for a cure for cancer, or help developing nations, or give aid to assist the needy or the traumatized. Human traits like perseverence, discipline, sacrifice, selflessness, and dedication to a common goal. It's all part of what is the human experience. And you always have the freedom of clicking a button on the remote if you really prefer to watch Oprah.

I really must disagree with you on this one, I respect your opinion, But I think you will find most people share my opinion, that the World Cup is Important, I`m just remembering how many supporters from each country competing went to watch the games during the tournament. Like I said this is based on my opinion.

Newspaper front-page press, major corporate advertising campaigns, and large-scale television coverage has quite an influence on what we think is important (if we read these newspapers and watch such TV).
There are indeed more important things going on in the world but football's quite fun. Mostly, it bonds communities together and the sense of it being a game tends ultimately to improve relations between different countries.

in which sense you are saying, you mean to say that important than life and bread.
world cup is important because the participating teams from different country representing their country, that what kind of people they , how much potential is that country has, how much that country is good in behaviour.world cup winning teams increase the pride of the country.people then know the worth of that country.
so it is far more than the game

Of course it is only a game but isn't it a better way for humans to get rid of their emotions and aggression than going to War like a number of Nations across this Globe. Maybe the US should be listening and send football teams to the countries they presently occupy.
