What goes through your mind and why? What assumptions will you make?

I often think they probably really wanted siblings growing up. I also think they didn't have to share stuff all the time. If they were isolated, I think they were probably bored a lot. I also think their parents were probably harrassed a lot about having only one.

Why would there be a reaction? I don't make any assumptions. Some people think that only children are selfish and spoiled, but that's just a stereotype. People who come from families with multiple children can be spoiled and selfish, too. It's all in the way you're raised. (By the way, I come from a family w/ four kids and my best friend is an only child.)

Reaction? What is there to 'react' about? I agree with others that it depends on how they are raised. I was a nanny for 4 kids for 2 years. The third child is soooooooooo spoiled, but the rest of them aren''t. I came from a family of 4 kids and my best friend is an only child (raised that way anyway as all of her brothers are way older than her and were grown by the time she was born). Neither of us are spoiled, etc. If someone reacts to hearing that someone is an only child, then I think that they are being judgmental and believing all the stereotyping out there.

I don't really react when someone tells me they were an only child unless it has any relevance whatsoever in our conversation.

But I know that the usual stereotype of course is the whole "you were/are a spoiled child."

I tend to not make any assumptions because I'm not a prejudiced person and try to have a neutral view of people I don't know.

Remember,
Dumb people discuss other people.
Average people discuss events.
Smart people discuss ideas.
