I love Ozzy.....but....I honestly think he should be in an anti-drug commercial. It sure would scare the kids into NOT trying anything!
I think he knows it's all in fun. I mean, the dude bit the head off a bat, urinated on the Alamo, and snorted a line of ants! If you can't make fun of that, what can you make fun of?
That said, he deserves respect just as much as any other music legend. He's brilliant, and he deserves recognition for all he's done for rock music. It seems like he's finally gotten it, with the R n' R Hall of Fame induction.

People forget that Ozzy is getting on in the years. He's been doing this rock thing for a long long time. His lyrics suggest he has an exceptional imagination and I would suggest above average intellect.
He is at the end of the day just another guy, with another job to do. Does he play up his character to camera and an audience? Of course he does. He's been doing it his whole life.
He portrays himself exactly the way his fans (producers, band, wife, investors...) want him portrayed. After all who wants to watch him act his age sitting at the dining room table and doing his taxes. Certainly not me.

His contributions to the music industry do deserve respect. But he is big enough if he thought someone was really poking fun at him, I think he'd find a way back at them.

He has his place in rock history, no doubt! I think he's acting a little with this old age/senile thing though. I've heard him sing and seen him being very coherent lately. ... Just my opinion.
