Looking for something profound. I struggle with very lenghty books. Just read the Alchemist, but thought it was kind of simple. What are some of the greatest novels written that one must read!

Here's a few:

The Great Gatsby
The Sound and the Fury
Ulysses
The Sun Also Rises
Moby-Dick

If you don't like any of these, you shouldn't be asking about great novels.

Here are a dozen:

The best American novel is Huckleberry Finn, by Samuel Clemens, writing under his pen name of Mark Twain.

Another that's well worth reading is The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway (one of his shortest!).
Of Mice and Men and/or (if you can stand another long one) Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck are both masterpieces.

Some others, in no particular order:
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.
Animal Farm by George Orwell
Canticle for Liebowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr.
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll (Dr. Charles Dodgson)
Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein
The Caine Mutiny by Herman Wouk

The Vicar of Wakefield By Oliver Goldsmith. Its an old novel(published 1766) but its one of the greatest ever written. It is an utterly simple, a nearly artless tale of life in a clergyman's family in 18th century England. "This world classic is both unforgotten & unforgettable" ; " THE VICAR is a world classic of undying renown" is how some critics describe it.

The Stranger by Albert Camus is quite profound and perfect for your short attention span.

For a must-read, I'd pick To Kill a Mockingbird.

Anything that looks good to you by CS Lewis might be good. Regardless of what you think of his Christian beliefs, you will not find his works "pushy" toward anything...rather, very witty, deep, and fun. Narnia is a good place to start. Also, The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald is great; and Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf, which inspired the movie The Hours, is great.
