I work for a newspaper...all I can say is go into broadcasting...thats the only way to make any money. Writing doesn't make shtttt...sorry to say...4 year degree is nothing without knowing the right people. Newspaper and magazines are going out because of internet and the tele-media...its really not the companies fault, its the market thats falling.

It's the basic law of supply and demand. There are a few coveted journalism jobs and a lot of people with journalism degrees which increases the competition. If you don't fulfill your duties as a reporter, there are always a hundred other people willing to fill your position once you're fired.
In my opinion, I don't think it would be hard to be a reporter. The qualifications are basically you have to be marginally attractive, be able to read and ask questions.

What would your life be like without clean water, trash collection, or the firefighter who saves your a*s! We're all under paid! My guess is you went to school to do what you do. Be proud of your contribution.

The answer is really very simple:
BECAUSE THEY CAN
If lots of people are still willing to work for peanuts, why would they pay them more?
