It takes a lot of hard work and you have to have a commercially viable product. The record companies are also looking for youth as well, so if you're older than 30 you might as well hang it up and be happy playing the club circuit. If however you are young and talented and have a product then I'd suggest that you play as many gigs as you can in whatever market you are in, or choose a bigger market if the time is right and don't be afraid to do commercials, fund raisers, and benefit concerts for hurricane or tornado relief. Also, new restaurants can sometimes get your picture in the local paper when nothing else will. See if a new BBQ place is opening up somewhere and find out if they're cool enough to allow a jam session in the parking lot. Talk to people and make connections. Don't drink too much or do drugs because that's not what companies want as their business partners...a lot has changed since the 60's and 70's. Always be on time, have a smile on your face even if a drunk has just puked into your shoe, play requests, and generally get involved as much as you can. It doesn't hurt either to have enough money to produce an independent CD of your music and market that as much as possible. Make sure you are using the best equipment you can and when you can step up don't be afraid to spend the money. Make sure you have a recognizable sound too. Good luck and keep on jamming!

This is an answer that will literally take more space that Yahoo gives us.
The way to get a deal is to show the record companies that you DON'T NEED ONE!!! It sounds like a load of BS; however, I swear to you it is the truth. You need to be out there busting your backside every day, living the music and the band. You need to promote yourself into playing sold out crowds in EVERY venue you play, whether it is the local sip and puke on Oom-Pah-Pah night, or the largest rock club in the area.
You need to get your music to the masses. Put a bar code on it, and have the local music store (usually only the small ones will do it) sell it at the register for you. The bar code will give you Soundscan numbers the labels can see. You need to be selling tens of thousands consistently for the majors to even begin to look at you.
Get a manager that knows what they are doing, and let them do what they do to get you where you're getting.
GET A LAWYER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is actually so much more to it than this, however it is a good place to start.

Well, unless youv'e been living under a rock the past few months, you know that that Americas favorite diamond studded slut Paris Hilton just got a record deal. If she can do it I'm sure you can if you drop down to her level. I'll do you a great service by releasing a song I wrote that is better than any crap she sings. It goes:
Do Do Do, Dah Dah
Do Do Do Do, Dah Dah Do
Bew Bew Bew, Bah Bah Bew
Dew Bew Dew Bew, Bew Dew Bew Dew
(refrain)
Bwop Bwop Do, Do DO Do Dah Dah
Dah Dee Da Dee Do, Dah Do Dee Dee Dee

Can't really help you with that one but you first need to get a book called Everything you need to know about the Music business. I picked the book up when I was manageing a group and it kept me from getting screwed as much as it could.
