I want to keep it simple for you since that is a very loaded question that probably requires many pages for a really good answer:

1. Advertising is your business' method for reaching your target market through different vehicles/media.
2. There are a couple of things to keep in mind to increase the likelihood of your advertising being successful:
Firstly, you have to define what the goal of the advertising is: it is usually one of these: to raise Awareness about your brand/business, to peak Interest in your business, to create a Desire/Want of your product/service or to provoke Action in a customer to purchase your product/service.

Based on your defined goal, you have to define measures for how you judge the 'success' of advertisements. For example, you want to increase sales by 50% or you want to increase phone inquiries about your product by 20%. Work your way backwards to understanding what type of media works on your target market to achieve your defined goal (using a radio ad on a top 40 station to reach a target market of men, aged 18-25, to peak their interest in your golf-related products).

Overall, just make sure you spend the upfront planning time to define your goal, measures and do your research about how best to reach your target market.

If you do this, I'm sure you'll do great. Good luck!

Advertising is the systematic way of opinions
about the product being exposed to the public
as potential belief. so to get positive response
to your product you must create propaganda
as it were, to grab the attention of public
opinion where they feel they believe in what
you are advertising. Art as propaganda for
the masses creates the archetype needed
to secure the awareness and desires to make
the masses come to your product.
gOOd luck !!!
cheers
