NAMED FOR KING JAMES:

Jamestown was established in 1607 on the James River in Virginia, in what is currently James City County, about 45 miles (70 kilometers) southeast of Richmond, Virginia. Both the river and the new settlement were named for King James I who had recently ascended to the English throne.

LEADER OF JAMESTOWN

John Smith Became a Leader of Jamestown
September 10, 1608
Did the Indian princess Pocahontas really save his life? Was he really captured and sold into slavery in Turkey, escaping with the love of a Turkish woman? John Smith may have been the first romantic of America; he certainly became an appreciated leader. Explorer, adventurer, writer, and cartographer, Smith assumed a leadership role at the Jamestown settlement on September 10, 1608. On the Atlantic coast of present-day Virginia, Jamestown was the first British settlement in North America, founded in 1607. At first, Smith wasn't even considered for the government.

JUST TO LEARN:

William Penn was the first great hero of American liberty. During the late seventeenth century, when Protestants persecuted Catholics, Catholics persecuted Protestants, and both persecuted Quakers and Jews, Penn established an American sanctuary which protected freedom of conscience. Almost everywhere else, colonists stole land from the Indians, but Penn traveled unarmed among the Indians and negotiated peaceful purchases. He insisted that women deserved equal rights with men. He gave Pennsylvania a written constitution which limited the power of government, provided a humane penal code, and guaranteed many fundamental liberties.

Well the town was named for King James and England had nominal power of the colony before the war. John Smith was the immediate leader however, as far as I know.

I am going to go with William Penn just because everyone else has ruled him out. I know it was a colony of England (james 1) and that Smith ruled later after the whole Pocahantas thing...this is so sad, I just saw a thing on History channel not 2 weeks ago and can't remember...
