I am writing a birthday card to a friend (kind of), and I need help with some ideas for the imagery I could use. He and I have been friends for about 6 months, and we both feel like God is pushing us o date one another, although we are both in circumstances where we feel we should wait before dating someone. (We're both completely single, before you start wondering) Anyhow, he and I both enjoy poetic imagery, and I was going to liken our friendship to that of a seedling planted by God. Something along the lines of not wanting to rush the tree, because it needs to grow first, and not knowing how high the tree will grow in the end, because only God can know that.

Besides being a bit sappy (no pun intended), do you think it translates? Can you think of a better image that would suit the friendship I described? I really appreciate your input.

Ok, it is 1:42AM, so you'll have to give me a little leeway on the actual wording...

The tree analogy works and is straight from your heart, so I would go with that, but if you want other ideas, how about these:

Like splendidly colored leafs fall from the Oak in Autumn, as should we fall for each other - without tugging, without force, but simply with the subtle catch of the wind, letting us flutter and dance to the ground, together.

Do not rush out to meet the sea in January. It is not ready. It is cold and sharp. Nor even with May's sun coating your shoulders should you jump too quick. Allow August, allow the tide to lick at your feet, slip up your body, and carry you into the warm waters away from the crowded shore. Surrounded by my affection.

Let dessert wait. Let us sustain our souls with the bread and fruits of His basket, allowing our bodies to injest the Word and with it the knowledge of our path. Then let us tentatively test that new road, a swirling chocolate cone in one hand, your hand in the other.

The idea of a tree being a friendship is amazing, you two being the friends and caretakers of the tree (friendship) helps it as well. You can't force the tree to grow, if you try to feed it too much (force the relationship) it may just die for being over watered. The more time and effort you put into being good caretakers the better you are rewarded, with a solid friendship that will last until something cuts it down. Or a natural disaster... God forbid, Good luck!

Beautiful thought, and a great idea for a birthday card. It totally translates, but slightly cliche. Unfortunately, anything else I can think of is also cliche. Go with the seedling, it completely conveys how you feel about the friendship.

If you feel God is pushing you to date, why are you resisting God's will?

The tree imagery is certainly beautiful. The problem is, do you really think God cares who you date?

Try to relate it to a redwood. Those big old' sequoias or however their spelt. They grow slowly but are beautiful, healthy, strong, and spell bounding, among other things.
