I would like to know what computer programming languages are used to do different online programs such as search engines, mail systems, chat programs, databases, etc.

The systems you described are complex and involve components built in many languages. However, if you want to learn one language that will let you build basic programs along those lines, I recommend Python. It won't be optimal, but it's good enough for all those things and easy to learn.

Mostly HTML (HyperText Mark up Lamguage) and java. Behind the scenes is a different story although.
