While the gecko may be shedding, and having a moist hide is a good thing, should I use a wet paper towel on the top of the hide or on top of the sand for him to walk on top?

A moist hide is a must for a gecko to shed without incident. I just use moss in my leos moist hide. It stays wet longer than paper towel which dries quicker. These are the instructions I used to make mine: http://www.reptilerooms.com/Sections+index-req-viewarticle-artid-1-page-1.html . And whatever you use, paper towels or moss, it goes on the bottom.

It will be best to have your wet paper towel on top of the sand and under the hide. Your gecko will scratch at it a little but it is very unlikely that it will eat the paper. I have raised leopard geckos for over 13 years and never once had 1 eat paper towel, even when they grab it when missing their target of a cricket or meal worm.

Hey P42... sell your gecko, or make an attempt to learn as you are clueless.

To start, ditch the sand... it only opens up the possibility of impaction. Paper towels can be placed on the entire bottom of the enclosure and it's much cheaper than sand. As for maintaining moisture in the hide, the easiest thing to do is fold up a paper towel, wet it and place it in the hide. For the most part it doesn't matter how you place it in there but putting it in there like a bed to lay on works well.
I do highly suggest getting a book called, "The Leopard Gecko Manual." It will provide you with answers to 95% of your questions and will keep you from getting bad info from folks that are clueless!

Lee's has out a new product for geckos to hide in. It has a hole on top where they come out and shed off the skin as they come out. Have never lost a gecko from using sand. More likely to lose a gecko from feeding the improper size food. You could also just let the gecko do what it does best and let it eat the skin as it comes off.

i have leopard geckos and i use wet paper towel inside a hide as i have heard that moisture can help them shed easier as sometimes the skin can get stuck on their toes and could cause them to fall off, mine have shed 5 times so far and they go into the hide to shed and i have had no problems.

I dont think that will be a good idea because he/she might start to eat the paper and choke. My lepord gecko has shed 10 times and he is fine

Get a book. Books have to be fact checked, while anyone can write anything on the internet.
