They're both forms of discrimination. If you do not like what someone else is doing because it doesn't fit into your ideal and you treat that person differently or make snide comments, then you are discriminating. NO ONE has the right to judge someone for what they do or don't do. There's only one entity in this world who can pass judgment. Let people live the way they want. Put yourself in their shoes. How would you feel if you have a flaw...even one you could control...and people make fun of you? Take a look in the mirror people, you're far from perfect.

The reactions to overweight people and to smokers is not on the same scale. The desire to not be around a smoker is justified...it can make you really sick. Who wants to have a wrecked immune system just because someone else can't go for an hour without lighting up. My home state, Michigan, is considering a law that basically outlaws smoking everywhere but in bars, cars, homes, and designated and separated smoking rooms. I am all for it! If someone chooses to wreck their own health, that's their perogative. But they don't need to injure mine in the process.

The overweight issue is completely different. While news media doesn't usually attack, everything and everyone else does. Everything from tv reality shows to the local mall strives to exclude, shall we say "curvier", people, Overweight people are teased, stared at, ignored, left out, or just plain insulted in everything they do. They are stereotyped as lazy, sloppy, unattractive, unproductive members of society. Given the high percentage of people in the U.S. who are obese, one would think that the treatment of larger people would change, but, sadly, it seems to be getting worse. A large person cannot even chat anonymously online without either lying to the people he/she is talking to or being called something to the effect of a "fat disgusting b****" on a daily basis.

I'm sure the mental health industry loves it, though. I wonder what the statistics are...how many people who are clinically depressed are or were overweight? There's money in that.

No Discrimination is when you are biased against someone for a reason they cannot control such as ethnicity or Race smoking and obesity is a lifestyle choice and completely within their control and if they want to be in a certain place at a certain time with certain people then they can take the necessary steps to include themselves until they do that they will have to live with their own Damn decisions and deal with it.

Having an addiction, whether it be to cigarettes or food, is a disease and needs to be treated medically just like any other disease. And anyone, who discriminates against them should be shot. It would be immoral to deny somebody health care just because they smoke or are fat. And yes, I feel that it is very abusive that there are anti smoking and anti fat people out there!

Being overwieght or fat is does not mean your a type of person. everyone can lose weight. America has a massive obesity problem. Its a pandemic. No where else in the world is it as much of a problem as it is here. It is killing us. It is an issue that should be pushed by the media.

I think there are several types involved in this. Some are genuinely concerned, however, maybe a bit fanatical due to some personal experience, some are just jerks, some are control freaks who always have to try to make everyone live their lives according to what they consider to be correct, and some are just out to make money.

Dscrimination is when you exclude someone for something that is not within their control
Smokers discriminate against us when they smoke within our vicinity - seeing as how they are excluding us from living healthier lives.
And obese people for the most part do have control of the shape they are in. They are some rare genetic or hormonal exceptions, but for the most part it too is a choice.

I think anti smoking laws are the greatest. Smokers have a tendency to do harm to the people around them. However the whole "anti fat" thing is just people trying to get rid of something they don't like to look at. I personally feel that if someone wants to eat themselves to death, let them do it.

Anti-smoking people, no. Anti-fat people, yes. Anti-smoking people are anti-smoking mostly because second hand cigarette smoke hurts everyone who breathes it. But being overweight never hurt anyone except the person who's overweight.
