Larry Bird, in my opinion, is the greatest all around NBA player of all time. The other four are:

2. Magic Johnson
3. Wilt Chamberlain
4. Bill Russell/ Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (tie)
5. Oscar Robertson

I would give Bird the edge over Magic because of his overall scoring ability (although Magic was never really called upon to score as much as Bird), and because Bird was a much better rebounder. They both were tremendous leaders who made evryone they played with better.

I would rate Bird over Wilt, Russell, and Kareem because of his court awareness, passing ability, and ball handling. Even though he was not blessed with exceptional quickness, he made up for it by intelligence and seeing plays develop before they did.

Larry Bird was a winner, period. He joined a team that had won only 29 games the year prior, and completely turned them around, winning 61 games in his first year. In 5 of his first 6 years in the league, his Celtics won at least 60 games.

He could do anything and everything on the court. But he always did it within the context of the team, because winning was the most important thing. Could he have scored more points? Absolutely, but when he was constantly being double and triple teamed, and he has all star teammates, why should he?

So yes, Larry Bird is the greatest all around player of all time!!!

BTW... No folks, Michael Jordan is NOT one of the top five players of all time... but that's another question.
