What would cause this and how do I fix the prob?

Yes I have my old 98 disk. But my cpu must be trying to boot from my hdd

You will need to buy the full version of Windows XP... not just the upgrade.

Do a complete format of the drive. Reinstall the XP upgrade. During the install you will be asked to put the Win 98 disk in to qualify for the upgrade. The install should go OK. from there, unless there is another problem.

do u have the older version that you originally had? u should reload that if u know how to and then run the upgrade, i know u said it was a new built but im sure at one point u musta had a older OS maybe?! try to load it though and then run the upgrade for xp other wise ull have to get the whole cd from somewhere

Try reformatting your pc again. You probably missed out on one of the dos prompts.

do you have your original cd ? do you still have the upgrade cd in the drive ?
