I just discovered Hood River, OR this past weekend. It's actually on the Columbia River near Mt. Hood, but since the Columbia is so big and it's so windy in the gorge, the river is almost like the ocean - wavy and choppy and TONS of windsurfers & kiteboarders there (which I will go back to learn both!). And nearby is the White Salmon river in WA which you can take a whitewater raft trip down or (if you know how) river kyak down as well. But the best part about Hood River, OR is even though its got ocean-like conditions, you have two gorgeous mountains in the back ground as well as being surrounded by the natural beauty that so many natives know as the Great Northwest.
Oh yeah, and for tropical getaways - Cancun! So much history nearby as well as great culture, food, and BEAUTIFUL beaches! Literally, the bluest water I've seen...

I've never been to Sanibel Island, but I have lived in Florida for 12 years now, and believe me you would never want to live where you vacationed at in general because it gets soo boring after awhile. I live a hour away from Disney World, and fifteen minutes from Busch Gardens. I'm telling you you'll get use to it, and it will become like having an ordinary zoo next to you. If you choose a different place to live make sure it's all what it's cracked up to be, and is benefitting you besides rides, and attractions. That's why I would choose Chicago, IL.

Orlando, Florida. Disney theme Parks, Universal theme parks, Sea World, close enough to NASA and Cocoa Beach, and also to Tampa to the Bush Gardens theme park and beach. So much to do and not enough money to do it all in one trip.

I like Ausable Chasm New York. It's in the Adirondacks, it's quiet, it's beautiful, and it's home to the nicest people on Earth.
