Most Kansans sided with the Union...
Kansas became the thirty-fourth state on January 29, 1861. Three months later the Civil War began. James Lane, a senator from Kansas, recruited 120 Kansas men into the "Frontier Guard." For three weeks they were billeted in the White House to protect President Lincoln from assasination.
Kansas Governor Charles Robinson began recruiting troops for the Union and after Lane returned from Washington he did also. During the war, 20,000 Kansans enlisted to serve with the Union. Kansas had 8,500 casualties, and the state had the highest mortality rate of any in the Union.

It's neither, it's the midwest...they aren't as bad as Northern Yankees, but they aren't quite Southern either. If I HAD to pick one or the other, I'd say Southern.
