In the movie RENT, isn't Benny married? I know plenty of times throughout the beginning and a little further into the movie, Benny is married to the rich, Allison. But, then he starts seeing Mimi when Roger breaks up with her.
Is Benny cheating on his wife? If so, how come nobody mentions anything? Did they divorce, or does nobody really care?

Benny used to have a relationship with Mimi in the past but they just became friends at the latter part of the movie. That is what I assume, though.
I do not think he is cheating on his wife because after all, Mimi's boyfriend also happen to be Benny's great friend from their younger days.

Benny is married throughout the movie AND the play [on which the movie is based - if you've never seen it, its sooo much better] to Alison - or Muffy, as Mark and Roger call her.
Benny does cheat on Muffy, and they never divorce. At the end of the stage version [I don't remember if this is in the movie or not], they talk about how Angel *told* Muffy, so she pulled Benny out of the area Mimi lived, so he would have to work somewhere else. Thus, no more cheating.
I don't think his cheating is really a big deal because of the environment all the characters are in. Beyond that, I get the impression Mimi and Benny are not having much of a emotional relationship, and more of a physical one.
Also - after reading the other replies I thought I would add this. I'm not trying to say anyone is wrong or that I know more than anyone or anything offensive like that, but Mimi and Benny WERE together in the play [and I believe the movie]. I believe they were together ONLY when Benny was married, even though its kind of confusing because they have a history before the show starts.
Roger had never met Mimi before the events in "Light My Candle". If Mimi and Benny had been going out before he married Muffy, aka when he was living with Roger and Mark, surely Roger and Mark would know her?

I don't think he is actually WITH Mimi in the movie, they were together in the past before he was married. Now he is just trying to be supportive and help her clean up because he is an old friend. Benny is a jerk, but not a complete jerk. In the play, I think they hook up.

Well he is married to Allison but he used to have a relationship with Mimi! He does see Mimi during the play I think when Roger leaves but, I think he cares for Mimi still even though she loves Roger and he is married!
Oh and in real life he is married to the girl that played maureen (Idina Menzel) So u know!

Wow, you're right. I never thought about that. But then again...it never really says that Mimi and Benny are dating or having sex. He just seems like a shoulder to cry on.

We never see Allison. There is no question about it. Its a dead end. No one seemed to care at all. The creator Larson did a good job for making Rent to broadway and left a legacy.
