I am a professional landscaper and I get between $40-$75 per hour. BUT... I'm actually in the trenches getting dirty. A landscape architect gets paid much more, but has to know more technical and engineering subject matter. Most never get dirt on their hands, and sit inside having meetings watching their dreams evolve. But like I said, the architects are highly educated. Most of my projects I plan out myself. When it gets more complex like grading surfaces and drainage issues I consult with an architect, and the cost of that consultation is passed on to the customer. So, if you enjoy the working end of it, be a landscaper. If you like the planning side and don't want to get dirty be an architect.

If you do decide to become a landscape architect, PLEASE know your plant material. Too many times, LA's will put plants in the wrong place (like azaleas in full sun), and the plants will look horrible until they die!

You can start off being a gardener (which I highly recommend). This way you will get to learn the plants and how they grow, what they need, which will better prepare you for a career as a LA. Plus you will have more credibility and your designs will have functionality!!
