The sweetness of the drink pales in comparison to the sweetness of the sweet. Imagine it like this: when you eat ice cream and cold water, the water always tastes warm because its not frozen like the ice cream.

Sweetness is defined by our interpretation of signals sent to the brain by nerves. Nerves act as wires sending electrical impulses from the taste sensors (in this case) to nerves running to the brain that fire in a certain pattern that tell us that what we are tasting is "sweet". When you eat a sweet, you saturate or approach saturation of these "sweet" sensing nerves which send the appropriate signal via hyperresponsiveness or depolarization. There is a resultant refactory period, or time in which these nerves are insensitive to further excitement. In other words, the "sweet" signal cannot be sent again for a certain period of time (especially for semi-sweet objects like coffee or tea) and thus you don't taste the sweetness as you normally would.

Because your taste buds are used to something sweeter and that sweetness is still on your tongue so your tea/coffee tastes bitter or watered down. Hope this helps!!!
