i'm not talking about the mating habits of badgers or anything like that. i'm talking about thought provoking documentaries like: "Bowling For Columbine", serial killer documentaries, "Paradise Lost", etc.
what do you recommend?

My favorite documentary is Dziga Vertov's The Man with the Movie Camera (1929), but I would also highly recommend Robert Flaherty's Nanook of the North (1922), Terry Zwigoff's Crumb (1994), Errol Morris' The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons of Robert S. McNamara (2003), Werner Herzog's Grizzly Man (2005), Michael Wadleigh's Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace and Music (1970), The Rolling Stones: Give Me Shelter (1970), Jeff Stein's The Who: The Kids are Alright (1979), Michael Snow's Wavelength (1967), Stan Brakhage's Dog Star Man (1964), Orson Welles' F for Fake (1973), and Godfrey Reggio's Koyaanisqatsi (1982).

America Exposed (uncut) are a great series of documentaries about different problems in America.. gangs, teen killers, serial killers, There is one episode about the West Memphis 3 in there. Also "come home alive" they are documentaries of people who have been held captive whilst overseas. Unfortunately though Im not sure where you can get these as I watch them on the crime channel, but I do know they are part of a series and you can get it, where is the question though. But perhaps this gives you something to look for :) Also a series of documentaries called "cold case files" they are hour long programs that show you a case and what the person did etc.. very interesting!

I highly recommend "Capturing the Freidmans". Its about a family in jersey where the father and younger brother get arrested for child molestation. You get to see how screwed up the whole family is.

I don't know if this counts, but...Pearl Harbor. The recent ones...it combines all my favorite element: history, romance, war, action, a little comedy, and the women wear old fashioned clothes!
