In pool it definitely means "spin," to put English on the ball is to make it spin in a certain direction. But I wondered how it came to be called English in the first place, and came up with this homemade explanation:
English is from [ Old English Englisc < Engle "the Angles"]
"Angle" is from the Latin word for corner, and one definition of "angles" is 'to turn in a sharply different direction,' which is what happens when you put English on a pool ball.

in pool english is where you hit the ball.... and where you hit, effects the spin, which also effects where the ball goes......so if u hit at the bottom off the cue ball, it will come back to u... and it is the opposite for the top of the ball, if you hit it ther the ball will be like a train, and go forward with even more force than normal
