My dad is 84 (god bless him) and is in a hospital in another state. I plan to get there within the next week. He is in "good" health, but had a few concerns, and checked himself in for testing. The results aren't back yet-but some Dr.'s assistant diagnosed him with a fatal condition based purely on observation. He scared the hell out of dad; and has him depressed. I am no doctor, and he "might" have this dreaded illness. Should not he get the test results first?? I'm really angry. Would you be?

a lot of diseases are diagnosed on observation. looking and palpitation are some of doctors' best weapons. sometimes the labs are sent just to confirm suspicions. and sometimes, there aren't even lab tests available for the condition, but the diagnosis can still be made.

Diagnosis can be based on physical exams and history given by the patient. To confirm the diagnosis, sometimes test results such as blood tests, X-ray, CT scan, MRI, Ultrasound and etc. needs to be done. You souldn't be mad, the PA needs to be honest with his findings. Would it make you feel better if the doctors doesn't tell you your actual diagnosis? What's the point of going to the doctor if you don't want to be told what's wrong?
