Because they think the common cold is a virus, when it's probably something else. Remember a couple years ago, when they found out stomach Ulcers were actually bacteria after treating them wrong for generations. I have a feeling the common cold will end up being an embaressing gaffe for the medical community as well.

OK, this is the true answer. Over the many decades, we americans get a common cold, and we feel stupid going to the doctor because we sneezed a couple of times, or have a sore throat, so any doctor would go broke, because in a couple of days it goes away. So what incentive has any doctor had to invent a cure? When the doctor gets a cold, they pretend not to, so that they can go to work, so that's a hidden thing anyhow. If someone gets a bad cold, like it turns to pneunomia or something, then that's not a cold, that's a virus, and the medical system has just recently figured that out, now they are beginning to see the difference. I guess they might both be viruses, but I think they need to distinguish various viruses, which isn't happening yet, like they do bacteria. Once they figure out the different type of viruses, and clamp down on micro type air flow diseases, even in air conditioning units in hospitals, then they will figure it out. There is so much to learn in this world. The common cold is one that is the key to lots of healing. Ron Couch

First of all, the common cold is caused by a virus. Viruses are harder to kill than bacteria. Secondly, what we think of as the common cold is not just one virus. There are over 20 different viruses (maybe more...trying to think back to microbiology class) that are considered the common cold. We build immunity to these colds as we grow older. Each time you get a cold it's actually a different virus. You then build immunity to that virus so you don't get it again. So in theory as you get older you should catch less colds.

The common cold is caused by a virus. And a virus cannot be killed/destroyed. Hence, there's no cure.

That's also the reason why a "cure" for HIV/AIDS is elusive.

Several hundred cold-causing viruses have been described, and a virus can mutate to survive, ensuring that any cure is still a long way off.
