The 1st answer is the best description of what the luteal phase is. What sometimes happens is that you can have what is called a Luteal Phase Defect. This is when you are deficient in the hormone progesterone. There is a specific amount that is necessary during this phase to nourish the baby before it's done traveling down the fallopian tube & implants in the lining of the uterus. Not having enough progesterone can cause the fetus to fail to implant & then u miscarry. This happens in the 1st couple weeks after you get pregnant. You have the option of taking extra progesterone during this time if u have miscarried already to correct this. Unfortunately it is not without risks to the fetus. The good news is even if u have this problem you can get pregnant and carry the baby to term & have a healthy baby without any intervention! The test for this is a couple months of basal temps that look abnormal and then an endometrial biopsy.

The Luteal Phase is a term that is used in describing the time period that's calculated from the day after ovulation and runs through the remainder of a monthly cycle. This phase usually lasts between 12 and 16 days and is fairly consistent within woman's cycle. This page explains the importance of the Luteal Phase and its function while charting your fertility spreadsheet.

The luteal phase is the day after ovulation and runs through the remainder of a woman's cycle. It is also frequently referred to as "days past ovulation" or "DPO". During the luteal phase a women produces progesterone increasing her temperature. The higher temperature acts like an incubator which is important in maturing a fertilized egg if conception has occurred.

A phase after you ovulate. After you ovulate and the egg is released, the place where the egg was is called the luteal body. It's probably when the luteal body is present.

It's the last part of your cycle (usually about day 11 through to your period appearing) after the egg has past the point that it can be fertilized until you begin bleeding.
