I just remember being scared out of my mind when the storm came thru town.
Now that I am older, I am still very afraid a tornado will come and I will be sucked up by it. I am so afraid of tornado's my new home I am planning on buying must have a basement, or I am not interested.
Is this an irrational fear? Does anyone else think about this.

Growing up in Kansas, I don't mind tornados at all. However, my mother has the same fear you do....she hates it when everyone else goes outside to watch. She's always the first to the basement. While I don't share your fear, I don't think you're irrational either. My little sister went through her first tornado as a baby, and she was TERRIFIED of the tornado sirens for the first 10 years of her life.

It makes sense that you are scared, but maybe try to move on a little, so you can be less scared, cause living life being afraid of something isn't that enjoyable so its not that irrational, its just not a healty fear, i mean in some places tornados can't even happen so last resort move to somewhere where tornado's cant' happen

You're justified in feeling afraid, but try to also keep in mind that there's also something awesome, beautiful and exciting about Mother Nature's power. Tornados, earthquakes, hurricanes. The best we can do is get educated and make rational decisions to protect ourselves as well as we can, and keep in mind that we are much more likely to be hurt on the highways than by the natural storms that come our way!

I feel the same way. I would never want a home without a basement. It's only irrational if you live somewhere that tornadoes don't occur.

thats completely understandable...childhood experiences play a huge roll on fears later in life. when i was pretty young, probably 6 or 7 i was petting my uncles dog and it was being really nice to me when all of the sudden it snapped and bit my hand. i remember it bleeding, me crying, and my hand hurting for days...now i dont like being around larger dogs, they scare me and i always think they are going to attack. so yeah, go for the house with the basement if it will help your fear, or even better, move to a place where tornadoes are not known to hit!

I am deathly afraid of tornadoes, I have reoccuring nightmares about them. I've never been in one, so I don't know where my fear came from.
