If not, why not? If so, why so? Which is a higher act of patriotism, reading & discussing the document or singing anthems & waving flags? If the document gets altered, would you know?

Yes I have. I am teaching in China, and there is something awesome about discussing the immortal words of Thomas Jefferson with young Chinese college students. They also enjoy Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and MLKing, Jr's "I Have a Dream Speech". As John Adams said on his deathbed (both men, former rivals now friends died on July 4, 1826) "Jefferson Lives." Actually the third President had died a few hours before, but John Adams meant "the spirit of 1776"- a spirit that will never die as long as America safeguards her freedoms from domestic and foreign enemies. One can both sing and wave flags, and meditate on Jefferson's great document- America's birth certificate.
