Why are so many questions on this website written with such poor spelling and grammar? There is a spellcheck here, so there is no excuse. Sometimes the spelling is so poor, and the sentences so badly contructed, I can't figure the question out.

It's disgusting. They are in the habit of spelling poorly because they have convinced themselves they can turn their education on and off depending on the forum. And what's harder to tolerate is that these habits take *time* to develop, so people are actually doing these things regularly enough to make them *habits.* Why are they going to school? To go through the motions?

Example: I have no idea why some use the IM/text abbreviations here. There is no spatial constraint in the answers! No one has to confine their replies to 100 characters, so the use of "u r," "ppl," etc. is utterly pointless. What's the hurry when typing *here*?????

Because people who can't spell are better than you and they don't care if anyone can understand what they are trying to say! Think how you would feel if YOU were stupid! Hehehe
Bad spellers are adamantly against trying to become better communicators. I think it's some sort of denial or defense mechanism, like when you tell someone they didn't do a part of their job right. They jump up and down, screaming that it's your fault that they are incompetent. One of life's little mysteries...Why do people create their own hell? Who freakin' knows? If the grammar is really bad, I don't answer. If they leave their answers to my questions, I don't even read what they type. It's a shame. There are a few intelligent people out there who, for whatever reason, cannot spell worth a damn. Maybe ADD has something to do with it, or maybe they're just lazy...

Spelling isn't a measure of intelligence, but it can be a measure of laziness. I think that spell checks are great, but people without them (or who don't use them) seem not to check their own spelling mentally.
Language is fluid, and it changes, but it's also really annoying to see so many people just not bother to spell things right. After all, if they are asking you to take the time to read their thoughts, ought they not take some time in composing them?

Peace.

There are a variety of reasons as others have noted but as the web is world wide I also suspect there are many contributors who English is a second language for and/or poor translation programs.

GYRL I NO
ha ha j/k but sometimes people like to shorten da word or use slang, but seriously people are not taken advantage of spell check and it is pathetic.

"Contructed"? Relax, we all make mistakes.

To answer your question, I think this forum (and most relatively impromptu online forums) is informal enough to allow "u" for "you", etc. It would be different if it were a formal term-paper, etc.

I can't understand why people don't use the spell checker too.....Since the sentences are so badly constructed........

I think it's because people type so quickly that they don't realize that their spelling is off! Or they just don't care!
