I REALLY want to go and study to USA or Canada Theatre Arts, but the thing is that my parents won't let me get out of the country because you know parents are like this. I'm trying really hard to get high grades and go for a scholarship, but if I fail and don't get it how do I convince my parents to let me go to study to another country and for them to pay the University, I spoke to them thousands of times but they always win. I need your help. I know that if I leave I will miss them and my sisters a lot but it's for a good education, and I would probably work there and not back in my country due to the fact that it doesn't offer any possibilities to develope your artistic studies but I want to study that it's really important to me. Any suggestion? I read every single answer.

Dude/Dudette,

You haven't mentioned if you're a guy or a girl. ( I have personalised ways of persuasion ! ) . See, you're currently at a fork in the road. Find a good time to have a round table talk with your parents. If your sisters are supportive, involve them into the conversation too. ( Otherwise, heheh....send them out for a movie. YOUR treat. )

So,when you're talking to your parents, be level headed and try to list the Pros and Cons effectively. Tell them where you'll be after 5 years ,following one path at a time. That is, tell them what you might achieve by following your dreams. I think you might have already done this. But I want YOU to put yourself in their shoes and see things from their point of view. Always follow your dreams. But parents know better. I've learnt it the hard way, after hearing them say , " We told you so..." a million times already.

So, first, think of the reasons WHY your parents aren't supporting ( or might not support ) you in this overseas education plan. If you don't get the scholarship ( God forbid ) you can ask your parents to trust you with this decision. It's not a risk. It's a venture. A win-win situation. If you succeed there, you're settled for life. If its rough to study overseas ,then you have a whole lot of experience. And don't let the cliches fool you. Experience ( a.k.a. Wisdom) is the only thing that is enabling my parents to say, "We told you so."

Summary:
1.Think of what they are trying to say. LISTEN. You are both on the same side. There's no winning or losing here.Forget that. You r parents have sacrificed everything dear to them to bring you to this stage.

2.If you still feel that you're on solid ground, then try to find the things that your parents don't like in this plan. If they have any objections ,try to address them.

3.Try to make them look at YOUR point of view. What are you going to achieve by studying overseas ? Tell them about this. Parents are usually trapped in a web of misinformation. Bring them out of this. Show them info on opportunities in your field, be it newspapers or TV ads or maybe someone who has accomplished this already.

4. Remember, in the end, your parents are always looking out for you...See, this is my personal opinion in this last point. But I have the conviction that our parents have Wisdom while we have Knowledge. And we got the raw deal. They can see through things more clearly. So, I can't overstress on the point that you HAVE to look at things from their point of view. LISTEN to them first.

Hope this helps, even a little .

Bye !
