I personally love Lake Powell Located in Nothern Arizona and Southern Utah. It's Gigantic! We rented a house boat on it for a week once and had a blast. You're surrounded by Mountains and rock formations. Their are more lakes in the region, but not very close together. I lived in Arizona and the mountains are great.

There are several places here in New Mexico that have lakes and mountains. As for why its great to live? Well I don't live in those particular cities or towns, I should say.
I prefer a metro city

Lake Tahoe is a lake in the mountains. It's absolutely beautiful, great skiing in the winter, casinos on the Nevada side, only a couple hours from Sacramento, CA or Reno, NV for great shopping.

Lake Tahoe, California... As you can see it's really nice because two other people above me said the same place for the exact same reasons. ;) Really, it's a beautiful place and it's not too far from Mammoth or Yosemite.

it's right on the border between california and nevada. they get some good snow up there, and in some parts (the nevada side) there is legalized gambling. It's pretty cool.
