I think that African Americans have interesting names because they want to make their children unique. In a world where African Americans become mere statistics, African American parents want to their children to stand out. A unique name means that you are an individual not just an average person

I'm african american and my name is Danneeka. Is that an "interesting" name? To be honest with u, this is the first time i hear a question like this. I think its all about being creative, about being unique. I mean how many Daves, Petes, Seans, Johns or Kevins do you know? I think its all about being different...being unique i guess *shrug*. We like to combine names together to make a name

I have asked many of my freinds and people I work with, who are black, as to the meaning of these names and whether they are of African origin. Most of them said no. If you look back in our history, you will see that these names have come into being within the last 30 years and is purely a U.S. phenomenon.

Uhhh, their native African language has different words than in English. Pablo is Spanish, Hans is German, Tyrese is African.

They make them up. Seriously, I have asked a few of them this same question and that is what they told me.
They also like to combine 2 or 3 names to make one name.
Cool, huh?

my husband and i combined our names for our four kids, one for example is neantae (nee-un-tay)....it is a symbol of our togetherness, a symbol of where he came from, and a symbol of his individuality....it's an honor when you name your child and then you say what it means, or know what it means to you...it's like the path he'll follow...it's known in history that that's what people of African decent did, and it was a tradition, well, i think African Americans carry that tradition without even giving it much thought..so i say African Americans keep on doing what you are doing, "name our kids them funny names, don't hate on us we fabulous"!....

They want names that reflect their culture and background, just like we do. My ex-husband and I chose our children's names based on our Irish American heritage, and it does not surprise me when other people do the same.
