Write a small article about "Heirloom quality Portraits". Announce your service and why or what are the occasions people seek to have handmade drawings; (Anniversary gift, Newlyweds, New Parents, etc.) Submit your article to ezines and newsletters. Most will publish it for free.

Have you thought about pay per click programs? The two biggest, I think, are Yahoo! and Google

A few free resources – check out the sources box for links:

1) Create a blog pertaining to your field

2) Use Yahoo! Local & Yahoo! Groups – Be sure to read the TOS for each one!

3) Write articles pertaining to your field and/or expertise.

4) Advertise on Craiglist

Also, consider signing up for an affiliate program. These programs enable you to advertise on other's sites (your affiliates) and once a sale is made to you, your affiliates & the program are paid a commission.

I listed a few handy sites & articles relating to marketing, promotion & advertising. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* The Complete Idiot's Guide ® to Marketing Basics by Sarah White
* The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing by Al Ries, Jack Trout
* Creative Advertising: Ideas and Techniques from the World's Best Campaigns by Mario Pricken
* Entrepreneur Magazine's Ultimate Small Business Marketing Guide: Over 1500 Great Marketing Tricks That Will Drive Your Business Through the Roof by James Stephenson
* 301 Do-It-Yourself Marketing Ideas: From America's Most Innovative Small Companies by Sam Decker

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

You will want to start submitting your website to different directories. The first one you will want to submit too is http://www.dmoz.org . This directory is free, but it may take time to have your site reviewed, usually around 3 months. Also submit your site to the smaller independent directories to build in-bound-links (IBL's): http://www.isedn.org (Independent search engine and directories network). You should also submit your website to the Yahoo! directory (https://ecom.yahoo.com/dir/submit/intro/).

The next step will be to start a Pay-Per-Click (PPC) campaign with Yahoo! Search Marketing and Google Adwords. Start small until you learn your market, it is easy to spend a lot of money real quickly. Keep your landing pages short and sweet for best conversion rates.

Good luck!

You have to find out what keywords for the business you are in are the top-searched keywords (ie. what words do people type in the search engine to try to find a business like yours) and put those words and phrases in the meta tag section of your webpages.

Overture is a very good site to find out popular search words:

After you do that, you submit your site to search engines like yahoo, dmoz, etc.

Google also has a search tool to tell you what keywords are the most popular:

These are free ways of getting your site up there. Of course you can pay and get sponsored link on google.

Other ways of getting your site noticed is to drive up traffic indirectly by posting in forums related to the services you offer, especially forums that rank high in the search engine when you put in certain keywords.
