Every labor is different. I have 4 kids. My first wasn't to bad. The pain was moderate. About a 4-5 out of 10. Contractions were tolerable and I never needed meds. I was only 16. I was in labor for 6 hours. Pushed for 2 of those. The pain comes and goes until closer to the end then it is pretty constant.

Now, with my second, labor was not at all painful.About a 2-3 out of 10. I would not progress.Had no contraction pain because they kept stopping. I had to get an epidural because they talked of a csection. Labor lasted 19 hours before I was far enough to push then pushed for another hour.. so 20 hours total. He also weighed almost 10 pounds which is why it took so long

My 3rd labor was awful. I thought I would die! I was screaming and yelling. I was only in labor for 6 1/2 hours and the time would not go fast enough.(45 min. of pushing) I had pain meds. She was turned so that her shoulders came out sideways which is why I had pain so bad. Her shoulders got stuck which made it even worse, then on top of that, I had a rib pop out of place. I did not have an epidural and the pain was worse than a 10. She was also almost 10 pounds.

Then my 4th was the easiest. Not much pain. Not a long labor. Only 5 hours, 1 of that was pushing. I was 27 and the pain was no better or worse than at 16. She was also almost 10 pounds.

So, it just depends. It will be different for everyone and every baby. But,if it was too horrible, noone would do it again.

Good Luck !You will do fine.

When labour begins your stomach starts to hurt like a sensation of a pinch but a lot of pinches all over your belly. The sensation is so strong that it will travel to your back. The most important thing to do when this happens is to be as relaxed as possible, and grab something to help you get through the pain. I had a ball. For every person the pain level is different. This is because some people have a high tolerance for pain and others do not. But the pain can be controlled if the body is relaxed, if you tense up your muscles will catch cramps where the pain is and it will be more painfull. It usually takes a couple of hours for the baby to come out, but in some cases it could take up to 24 hours. The pain comes sharp and takes a couple of minutes for it to go away. But then it comes back again. You know when the baby is ready to be pushed out when the pain comes every 5 min. At first they come every 10 min or so. There is always the epidural that numbs you from the belly down. It's a long needle that goes into your back that inserts a tiny tube that is then injected with the numbing medication. Don't be scared just remember not to tense up. Good Luck with the baby.

Well each person is different, each labor is different. You won't know until it actually happens. I have had three babies. My first, I was 19, my labor felt like bad gas cramps in the beginning, then progressed when it got closer to my oldest coming out. I had him natural and was in labor for twenty and a half hours. My second baby was a short labor, I was 25, but harder and more painful, I had an epidural. Labor was six hours total, baby took fifteen minutes to get out. My first it took two hours. My third baby, I was 27, I was in labor for nineteen and a half hours, and it was back labor, it felt like really bad lower back pain. I had another epidural. Pushing took half an hour. So it really depends, each one is different. Don't be afraid, I know easier said than done with your first. Just know your options of pain relief and remember to breath. Do you have someone who will coach you, like your own mother, or a friend who's had a baby before? That will help you too. Just try not to be afraid, remember we were born to handle this, every mother goes through it. Also, one more thing, we don't remember how painful it is after we hold our babies for the first time and look into their faces. You will be ok. Nothing will go wrong.

It varies greatly from person to person. I don't know about being over 30, I'm 23 but I'll tell you my experiences. With my first, I was almost 21 and the doctors induced my labor with pitocin(sp?) at around 7pm and the contractions started before too long. I was also group b strep positive so I had to have penicillin every 4 hours which stung and was almost as bad as the contractions. I got an epidural which was wonderful and I slept a little and then the baby was ready. It took me 30 minutes of pushing and my son was born at 7am so it took 12 hours from start to finish. The doctor did an episiotomy so I had some stitches but other than that it went great. With my daughter I was almost 23 and they tried pitocin and nothing happened so they had to wait 12 hours to try starting it again and the second time it took but it was slower going than with my son. They started the pitocin around 2 or so in the morning, after a while I had an epidural. This time it didn't go as well as the first. There was a lot of pain and it didn't block as much of the feeling as the first but it was still helpful and my daughter was born at almost 4pm. With her, the doctor didn't do an episiotomy and I did tear but it didn't seem to hurt as much as the episiotomy did. I felt great after I had her too. I was walking around after the epidural wore off. I know that my experiences were a lot easier than some people but that's all I have to go on. If you can get an epidural I would definately go for it. I was scared to get one before because I thought that it would hurt but it was much better than the alternative I'm sure. Good luck!

Everybody is different...
For me it was fairly easy....
It started off just like menstrual cramps, just around my bellybutton.
As the cramps got a little stronger they moved down.
From the first cramp to the pushing stage, I would say it took about 10 hours.
But, when I started to get the cramps, I didn't even realize that it was labour.
Each cramp last maybe a few minutes.
When you have the urge to push - its just like you have to go to the bathroom and have a bowel movement. This is the final stage.
I hope this information is helpful. You should also try to attend the birthing classes at the hospitals, they are very helpful and informative.
Don't be scared....it is a beautiful thing and the feeling you have afterwards is worth it all.
Remember, if it was that bad there would be plenty of families with only 1 child.
Good Luck...
Elizabeth

the best way i can answer this is to tell you how my delivery went. my water broke in my sleep, it was a very slow leak, i thought i just wet the bed a little, didnt really think anything of it, and i had a doctors appt that day so i figured id just ask her. so when i got there, i told her, and she sent me straight up to labor and delivery. i wasnt having any contractions so they had to induce me because it is not safe for the baby to stay inside me after the water has broken, they can get a serious infection. the contractions started out weak and got stronger and stronger, they feel like really strong menstral cramps, mine hurt really bad. once i was dilated enough i got an epidural, then i felt nothing, it was great. i was in labor for a total of 26 hours, but only an hour and a half of that i was pushing the baby out. when the baby is about to come out (with an epidural) it just feels like you have to take a crap. and then there is pressure down there but its not painful at all. i remember i was so scared before hand, i imagined it being so painful and so miserable, but it wasnt as bad as i expected, it was actually much easier than i thought it would be. my recommendation to you is to get an epidural, they are the best things ever made. :)

It's the most pain that you will experience in your life..age has nothing to do with it. There is pain medication, but that can't be given until labor has progressed. The pain does come and go, but as it progresses the pain in more steady and lasts longer. Pushing can last for a few minutes or hours. Everyone is different.

Labor feels like a very strong menstrual cramp, that comes and goes in a regular pattern, getting closer and closer together. It can take 20 minutes to push the baby out, or hours of pushing.
