Learn the basics of how to play the guitar, with me, I basically put the guitar in my hands, struck a note, then I start playing and singing off tuned with myself.I kind of like it that way makes me feel like a producer or talent scout. Hire a music teacher wherever flexible, to teach you how to master the guitar. Also, get your self a tape recorder it will become handy.

Learn how to play chords, and a few notes, and get a good progression going. Eventually the words will come. Or, if you can think of a funny poem put it to cords. An easy way to practice putting words to music is if you have to learn something for school.

"oh, if somethings worth more the first time
then worth less as it progresses
thats diminishing returns
(G-C-G progression)

lets all learn and have fun"

ok so that was dorky, but you get the idea, before you know it you'll be croning corny love songs to your sweetheart like the best of them.

Just play something, if it sounds good keep playing it until you memorize it. Its also a good idea to run it by a friend and see what they think about it. And don't worry if it sounds like another song, as long as it doesn't sound exactly like it, besides its hard to write a completely original song, seeing as they're a billions of songs.

Think of a scenario, something that has happened to you in your past or present or future. Think of telling it to someone as a story. The story can generate a soundtrack in your head like in a movie. Then, like a puzzle, try to make the words flow within the melody that make sense as a story teller would do.

Just fiddle around with the strings. Soon you'll get some tune in your head and you'll try and make it up on your gutair. I do it all the time.

I think you might benefit from utilizing some music theory. Try the following web sites to get you started with that:

Hope that helps!
